Learning 3D design

We got our now 11-year-old son a 3D printer for Christmas in 2023. We've had fun finding things to print on Thingiverse etc. but he wants to take the next step and design his own things! How do we acquire this skill that neither parent has? (Child is pretty good with paint programs but not terribly familiar with drawing programs)

We are homeschooling our son at the moment and we've tried local makerspaces. Unfortunately they have a minimum attendance requirement and we haven't gotten enough interest in our locla community.
