Nikon has created a compelling lineup of prime lenses featuring fast apertures and premium optics. The 135mm f/1.8 Plena anchors the telephoto end, while the 85mm and 50mm f/1.2 lenses bring incredibly bright apertures to the normal range. The new Nikkor 35 mm f/1.2 S is a logical foray into the wide-angle world.

The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S is part of the S-Line* series and realizes outstanding optical performance. It emphasizes the main subjects with soft and beautiful bokeh and provides realistic texture expression. Sharing the same design concept as the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S and the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S, it offers superior rendering capabilities and delivers depictions with a sense of depth, even at its wide angle of view.

For the Nikon 35mm f1.2 DX SR, I want to tap into a quote by poet Peter Burghardt. “I waste too much time trying to figure out how I look. The best trends are always a change or a return, settling into reruns and knowing what they’re not.” When I read this quote, it brought me back to earth.
It's a hearty lens to carry around all day. At 37.4 ounces (1,060 grams) with an 82mm filter diameter, the 35mm is about the same size and weight as the Nikkor 50mm f.1/2. The controls are pretty simple with a very large and smooth-turning manual focus ring and some customizable buttons. Like all premium S series lenses, the Nikkor 35mm is fully weather-sealed and feels like a high-quality product. For something as large as it is, the 35mm f/1.2 felt nicely balanced on the Nikon Z8 that I tested it with. At the end of the day, I didn’t feel overly burdened by the combo, but this lens will add some noticeable weight and bulk to an otherwise fully loaded camera bag.
And at the end of all this, I think that I’d reach for the Nikon 35mm f1.4 Z instead because of the extra little bit of character that Nikon says it delivers. It’s also small and lightweight enough that I’d want to carry it around with me. But that opinion might change.
