Pokémon TCG Pocket has made waves in the mobile gaming world, racking up over 10 million downloads in its first week and pulling in a staggering $120 million within its first month. A quick glance at its success shows that the developers hit a home run with some key decisions, such as offering two free Booster Packs daily and giving players a generous helping of Gen 1 Pokémon for their Pokedex. It’s a great way to lure in the nostalgia-driven crowd and keep things fresh with a constant influx of new content.
However, despite the game's impressive start, Pokémon TCG Pocket isn't without its rough edges. The most glaring issue? The balance—or rather, the lack thereof—especially when it comes to competitive play. While there’s no shortage of powerful decks, certain types have proven to be much more dominant than others, and it’s creating a rather lopsided metagame.
Fire and Water Rule the Roost
At the moment, fire-type and water-type Pokémon seem to have the upper hand in Pokémon TCG Pocket. Decks built around cards like Charizard EX and Moltres EX can dish out massive damage while boasting substantial health pools to stay in the game longer. Meanwhile, the Lapras EX and Articuno EX combo lets players hit hard and heal quickly, making these two types the undisputed champions of the current meta.
These powerhouse decks often leave grass-type Pokémon on the sidelines, as their damage output just can’t compare. While Venusaur EX and Exeggutor EX have their moments as sturdy tanks, their attacks simply lack the punch that makes fire and water types so terrifying. Even worse, the grass-type decks lack a strong supporting Trainer card to give them an edge in battle, leaving them vulnerable to the brutal attacks of water- and fire-based strategies.
A Meta That Needs Some Oxygen
The current state of grass-type decks in Pokémon TCG Pocket feels like a perpetual struggle for oxygen—constantly overshadowed by the mighty flames of fire-types and the crushing waves of water-types. This has become even more apparent in recent events. The game’s first promo event, which revolved around Lapras EX, clearly catered to the water-type enthusiasts. More recently, the ‘Fire Pokémon Mass Outbreak’ event has allowed players to snag some rare fire-type Pokémon, further solidifying the dominance of these two elements.
Grass-types, on the other hand, are barely given a chance to shine. The lack of grass-focused special events or promo cards has created a noticeable imbalance. Fans of Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Venusaur might feel like they’re being left in the grass to wither.
Could Grass Be Coming Back?
It’s not all bad news for grass-type fans, though. There’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Recent leaks suggest that a Venusaur Drop Event could be just around the corner, set to kick off on November 29. This new event could introduce a powerful, upgraded version of Venusaur EX, potentially giving the grass-type deck the boost it needs to compete more effectively with its fire- and water-type rivals.
Of course, one card won’t completely tip the scales, but it’s a step in the right direction. If this promo event delivers on its promises, we could see grass-type decks finally catching up to the powerhouses that dominate the game. It’s a long shot, but it’s a shot nonetheless.
