While rumor had it Amazon would be releasing new Kindle e-readers this fall, we weren't expecting it to refresh its entire Kindle line. But that's exactly what Amazon has done. The company on Wednesday introduced four new Kindles, including its first ever color Kindle, along with upgrades to the entry-level Kindle, the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Scribe.
For years, Kindle users have asked Amazon to make a color version of its e-reader. Now, the company is finally delivering: it’s launching the new Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, a device that has a lot in common with the new Paperwhite, except instead of black and white it’s color all over. The Colorsoft costs $279.99 and is available for preorder today, with shipments starting October 30th.、Everything about Kindle Colorsoft was meticulously designed to deliver rich, paper-like color. It uses an oxide backplane with custom waveforms for fast performance and a higher contrast on both color and black-and-white content. Its custom Colorsoft display includes a new light-guide with nitride LEDs that, when combined with our custom algorithms, enhances color and increases brightness, all without washing out details. You can zoom in on images without worrying about pixelation, and you can choose between standard or vibrant color styles. Kindle Colorsoft comes with wireless charging, up to eight weeks of battery life, and is waterproof so you can bring it with you in the bath or take it to the beach without having to worry.
At $160 (£160), the new Kindle Paperwhite also costs $10 more than the previous Paperwhite base model. But the changes to the Paperwhite seem more substantial. Amazon has reduced the size of the bezel around the screen, so instead of a 6.8-inch diagonal E Ink display in a similar-sized chassis, you get a larger 7-inch screen. The device itself is also thinner and has 25% faster page turns. Amazon is touting it as the fastest Kindle yet and the page turns and refresh rates seem noticeably quicker.
Making the Colorsoft happen, Amazon executives said at a launch event on Tuesday in New York City, required a lot more than just swapping in a new display. “Frankly, the technology just wasn’t ready” before now, says Kevin Keith, who runs Kindle products for Amazon. “And we now think the tech is ready.” (Kobo, Remarkable, and others might disagree that it wasn’t ready before.)
The all-new Kindle Scribe combines all the benefits of Kindle with a powerful notetaking device. The display has new white borders, and the screen has a smooth, paper-like texture that makes it look and feel like you’re writing on a sheet of paper. Plus, at 300 ppi, text looks crisp and clear when you’re writing or reading. The Premium Pen is finely crafted to deliver just the right heft and balance, so it feels like holding an actual pen, and the new soft-tipped eraser feels like a pencil—you’ll think you have to brush the screen clean after erasing.
