The main tool for this project is the Craig pocket hole tool, which allows for strong joints. Additionally, you’ll need clamps for securing pieces and a speed pilot to ensure precise drilling.
Assembly Steps
Preparing Your Materials
Once you have your timber cut to size, separate and label each piece according to your cutting list. This will streamline the assembly process.
Drilling Pocket Holes
Identify the pieces that need pocket holes: front slats and side braces. Drill the necessary pocket holes in the specified locations.
Assembling the Front Section
- Place your 725 mm legs on the table.
- Use the 280 mm struts for spacing, ensuring they are offset 150 mm from the bottom.
- Apply wood glue to mating surfaces before securing with pocket screws.
- Repeat for the other side.
- Use similar methods as the front section but with longer legs to accommodate the backrest.
- Ensure your seat braces are positioned correctly, using pieces of timber for accurate spacing.
Connect the two sections using pre-drilled pocket holes on the side braces. Use a right-angle clamp for precise alignment when securing with screws.
Attaching the Seat Slats
Attach the outer seat slats first, then evenly space the middle slats for a consistent look.
Filling Holes
Use wood filler to fill screw holes and any misaligned joints. For pocket holes, use pocket plugs made from the same timber for a seamless finish.
Sanding and Sealing
- Sand the entire structure using 120-grit sandpaper to remove any resin buildup and uneven edges.
- Once smooth, apply an exterior wood sealer to enhance the natural look of the pine and protect it for outdoor use.
