Lithium-ion batteries have increased in popularity in recent years, commonly found in mobile phones, power tools, laptops, tablets, e-cigarettes, e-scooters and e-bikes, they have become standard in the electronics industry. The batteries are widely used because they are light-weight, contain a lot of energy for their size, have long cycle durations and shelf-life, are quick to recharge, and have low self-discharge rates.

A smartphone that suddenly bursts its bounds? A tablet with a bulge? A laptop with a bump? Batteries can swell for a number of different reasons - such as overheating. In extreme cases, they can even double in size, so that your device's cover may start to bulge. The phenomenon occurs mainly with lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries. These are the batteries that are generally standard in smartphones, laptops, e-readers and fitness trackers today.

Detecting and preventing swollen batteries in your phone or laptop is crucial to avoid potential safety hazards and ensure the longevity of your device.Lithium-ion batteries, however, do not like high temperatures and if used incorrectly have the potential to enter a thermal runaway cycle when under stress and catch fire and explode. Fortunately, the devices that utilise lithium-ion batteries must contain a battery management system (BMS) that shuts the battery down when these cycles are detected.
Swollen batteries, while not common, are a significant risk. They are the result of too much current inside a cell of the battery, which causes a build-up of heat and gas. This can be caused by several factors, however, the most common are overcharging, manufacturing defects, deep discharge, or damage to the battery.

Lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries have many advantages, such as a high energy density and long battery life. But there is also a disadvantage: lithium is a lot more reactive than most of the substances found in other batteries. The battery's cells can produce a gas when overheated, and the pressure caused by that gas causes this odd swelling.
Lithium-ion batteries can swell due to manufacturing defects or user misuse. In case of a manufacturing defect, the battery may experience an excess current flow during the charging process, which can result in the formation of gas and heat buildup within the battery cell. The gasses formed are primarily a combination of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. This occurs due to the breakdown of the electrolyte solvents, such as ethylene carbonate and dimethyl carbonate, in the presence of excessive heat or overcharging. The accumulation of these gasses within the sealed battery casing leads to the physical expansion of the battery.
Using a device with a swollen battery is unsafe, posing a risk of explosion and damage to the device. Replace the battery immediately.
Swollen batteries cannot be repaired; they must be replaced. Do not attempt to fix a swollen battery by placing it in a freezer, as this can cause further damage.
