Important dates throughout the history of newspapers

* 1447: Johann Gutenberg invents letterpress printing, which eventually enables mass production of the printed word.
* 1501: Pope Alexander VI decrees that all printed material must be submitted to clerical authority prior to publication. The decree is intended to prevent heresy.
* 1588: In Germany, Michael Entzinger publishes a newsbook that reports on the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
* 1631: The Gazette is founded in France, becoming the country's first newspaper.
* 1690: Publick Occurrences appears in Boston, becoming the first newspaper published in America. The newspaper is suppressed by royal authority after just one issue.
* 1704: Daniel Defoe begins publishing the Review, a periodical that covers European affairs.
* 1803: Australia's first newspaper, the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser, is published.
* 1851: Reuters is established. Reuters is a global news agency that is still around today.
* 1880: Photographs appear in a newspaper for the first time.
* 1900: Iskra is founded in Germany by Vladimir Lenin. The revolutionary newspaper becomes a major tool for Communist propaganda.
* 1903: The first tabloid newspaper, the Daily Mirror, is developed in London by Alfred Harmsworth. The Daily Mirror changes the newspaper industry in many ways, including the introduction of the "exclusive" interview, a device which remains popular today.
* 1994: The first independent online daily publication appears on the World Wide Web.
