Factors to consider when looking at a phone's cameras
Try it before you buy it: It's one thing to ogle over the camera features of a phone, but it's another to actually try them out in a store.

Don't overlook affordable phones: The $499 Pixel 8A and $599 iPhone 13 can do almost everything that a new premium phone can do for a fraction of the price. Save some money and still take great snaps.
What's the difference between real cameras and phone cameras?
The biggest difference between a dedicated camera and a phone camera is the size. A dedicated camera has a larger sensor and bigger lenses that take in more light. The results are photos that have more detail, a wider dynamic range and more versatility in medium and low light. A phone camera is tiny. The sensor is smaller than a fingernail and the lens is about the size of a single Lego brick. To overcome the limitations of a small sensor and lens, a phone uses computational photography (AI and machine learning) to combine parts of multiple images into a single photo that's brighter and has more detail than a phone camera alone.

What should I look for when buying a camera phone?
Number of megapixels
There was a time when mobile phones marketed higher megapixels to suggest higher quality, but it's not that straightforward. The Samsung S22 Ultra sports a massive 108Mp main lens, something that's also present on the S20 Ultra and S21 Ultra. But ask yourself why Apple, which is also renowned for excellent cameras, opted for a 12MP main lens on the rival iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Telephoto lenses
As most modern smartphone photography takes images with different lenses, and then uses internal software to stitch them together into one final photo that can be viewed and shared, a telephoto lens is also great for creating the impression of depth in the background – think of Apple's portrait mode, which wouldn't be possible without a telephoto lens.
