Lesson: It could make sense on paper to try to monetize Diablo's loot. However, once you begin doing this, you're draining pleasure from the game. The same is true for Diablo Immortal, and it is noticeable before you even reach the final stage, because it's embedded into the game's structure. The drop of loot is less effective, while character progression is artificially slowed and divided across too many systems, which are too rough and coarse. It's more cleverly disguised than it was at the launch of Diablo 3, but it's a similarly unrewarding slog. The purchase of a battle pass or investing a lot of money in legendary crests doesn't help much in the sense that paying for a great item drop isn't as exciting as simply grabbing one.

I'm not entirely sure if there is a way of separating the essence of what makes Diablo fun apart from the mechanics that make it a free-to-play monetization. If it's possible, Blizzard and NetEase have not found it. They've created a mobile-friendly Diablo game that's simple fun and generous at first. But , if you're spending enough time with it there's no doubt that the heart of the game has been cut out in pieces, sliced up, and sold back to you piecemeal.

Diablo Immortal isn't nearly as good as a no-cost Diablo could be. It's true that the game can be challenging at every turn , with a variety of microtransactions in all sorts of inscrutable currencies. You will have to grind to get to the top especially if you choose to avoid spending money on the game. Your reward for all it is a more sloppy duplicated version of Diablo II's plot.

But, for all its flaws, am a fan of Diablo Immortal more than I disliked it. It's got everything that makes Diablo Immortal a success and enjoyable, from its intense gameplay, to its open-ended customization of characters as well as its superb sense of setting, and the endless stream of intriguing loot. Indeed, Diablo Immortal even has some clever gameplay twists which I hope Blizzard will keep in place as they work on Diablo IV.
