The developer seems to be taking the nuclear alternative, saying "we're contemplating in the near future to take in the Duel Arena out of RuneScape entirely." In the meantime, it will implement "some quick-term steps" to clean up PvP "until our team of developers is able to release an important update that completely eliminates Duel Arena next year."
These will include a cap in the number of GP, or gold points and players will be able to stake a match in the Duel Arena. Players can place bets "no higher than $50m GP for each duel". Other measures haven't been described as of yet.
Jagex claims that "a brand new experience that'll be part of the ongoing Elder God Wars storyline" will replace Duel Arena in early 2022 however, no specifics have been announced yet.
While the impact of these changes is yet to be seen but they are the strongest measures any studio has made to combat external abuse of its systems for real-world financial gain. If successful, similar measures might be found in the MMO space in future.
Jagex announces that after 18 years of being the battleground for PvP, Duel Arena will be ending its presence in RuneScape and a new region will be added. RuneScape is scheduled to unveil Het's Oasis and a brand new terrain, new skills, and two new mini-quests you can try.
This morning, the Oasis Restoration the players will be charged with the transformation of the Duel Arena following a cataclysmic earthquake that has devastated the arena. Players will need to join forces to transform the decrepit arena from "a blood-soaked fighting pit in which heroes have long staked their fortunes in one-on-one battles, to a tranquil oasis."
