Beyond the moment-to-moment gameplay, FIFA 23 predictably focuses its improvements on the mode that earns EA more money. The microtransaction-ridden Ultimate Team is flush with additions, but Career Mode and Volta Football barely get a look-in, which says much about EA's long-standing attitude to these modes, especially in this supposedly ornamental final FIFA-branded entry.

It's the same gripe we've had when it comes to Madden NFL 23 and NBA 2K23 even though we dislike how they alter the field of play to favor the team that pays the most, a lot of people are playing and spending money on it that EA simply keeps increasing the number of players on it, instead of the balanced and fair games we like more.

FIFA 22 marks the beginning of the next generation of virtual football even though it doesn't completely reinvent the ball, the attacking and defending gameplay is more fluid from moment to moment. Goalkeeping blunders and visual inconsistencies aside the fact that this year's FIFA remains to be one of the most enjoyable and nuanced multi-sport games on the market. Furthermore, the additions to Career Mode and Volta Football make FIFA's major modes more fun to play.

Microtransactions will always be a big issue and can be a major issue, but minor changes as well as the performance of the latest generation consoles make FIFA 22 feel like a worth the investment without needing anything revolutionary or terribly exciting by EA's side. - Jordan Oloman, September 27, 2021
