In light of the scandalous revelations regarding the company's "frat boys" culture, this is now an issue that we must look into Blizzard games, too.
In a number of ways the beautifully created remaster Diablo 2 is unlucky to be Blizzard's debut release since that the State of California filed suit against the studio. The majority of the work for it was performed by Vicarious Visions, a blameless firm that only joined Blizzard at the beginning of the year.
(Indeed its former studio head Jen Oneal was recently named co-leader of Blizzard and a brand new broom was presumably designed to be the one to lead the change there.) In addition, the original game of 2000 was created with the help of Blizzard North, an independent studio that is distinct from the SoCal mothership.
Diablo 2 is an adopted kid of Blizzard culture, at most. But Diablo played a role in setting the Blizzard tone through its unique aesthetic, kitchen-sink lore, cutting-edge online multiplayer, and the final game of unimaginable depth and complexity.
It's important to spell all this out, however, it's not my place as a person of opinion to inform you on how to feel about playing Blizzard games in 2021. That can only be a personal choice. Personally, as an avid player of the studio's games, I remain unsure.
But I've let it have no bearing on the rest part of this review. That's nothing to suggest I do not have complex feelings regarding Diablo 2: Resurrected for various reasons.Diablo 2 is a beast of a title that, 21 years on, still has a long shadow over the agonizing development of the game's successor (a fate Diablo 4 doesn't seem to escape, either) as well as over the genre of action-RPG it established.
