The most impressive act of kindness has to be on the part of developers Jagex who dedicated in game statues (and, more recently, a pub) in honor of a top player known as 'The Old Nite", who tragically died on the real world in 2006. The player had been active since RuneScape's inception in 2001 and was often the second-highest-ranked player, right next to Zezima.
Based on alleged activity on his profile post-2006, a myth circulated claiming the man was alive however, this was allegedly put down to hackers temporarily getting access to the account that was locked. While neither one of these claims are completely proven but this virtual interpretation of a ghost tale does reveal a cool aspect of MMORPGs as a whole: a myriad of stories can start up about the players who actually play them.
I'm not sure if that statue to The Old Nite still exists, but it stood near the southern end of the Wilderness (or "Wildy," for short) an enormous expanse of wasteland to the north, frequented by beasts and player-killers. I never made the pilgrimage to the site to view it. It's a shame.
