The best thing to do has to be the work of the game's developers Jagex when they dedicated an on-game sculpture (and, more recently pub) to honor the memory of a star player 'The Old Nite", who tragically died in real life in the year 2006. He was active from when RuneScape was first launched in 2001. was frequently the second-highest-ranked player, right after Zezima.
Due to alleged activity on his profile post-2006, an rumor circulated that claimed it was true that he was alive and was said to be due to hackers temporarily getting access to his account that was locked. Although neither is substantiated fully however, this virtual representation of a ghost tale does show another interesting aspect of MMORPGs they can be a source of mythology. can start up about the gamers who play their games.
I'm not sure if the statue that is located at The Old Nite still exists however it was located near the southern edge of the Wilderness (or "Wildy" for short) which is a vast expanse of deserted land in the north, frequented primarily by beasts and player-killers. I've never gone to visit it. It's a shame.
The biggest weakness of RuneScape, which may also be its largest advantage, is one common to almost every other MMORPG: its sheer longevity. In between the exhilarating quests and high-octane PvP battles is the relentless grinding out of mundane household chores like fishing, mining or cooking to help level up or get the credits to buy that pesky new helmet or piece armor. Gotta make money somehow, right?
Although these can be a bit relaxing, it's time spent doing the same thing over and over - time that could or might not be better spent with a few shorter, but not less traditional video games.
Rather than being one straight battle, RuneScape is a painstaking battle of attrition that's both long and grueling, and it never ever ends. But it is immensely rewarding if one is willing to invest the time in it, and I was. At least for a one or two years.
